Living in Saratoga

Saratoga is home to several notable vineyards, including Masson's Mountain Winery, The Cooper-Garrod Estate, and Savannah-Chanelle. In fact, living in Saratoga offers ten major vineyards within easy reach, many of which include restaurants, tours, and tastings.

Saratoga is an affluent city with some impressive mansions dating back to the Victorian era, including the Winchester Mystery House, Rengstorff House, and Ainsley House, all of which are open to the public. The first on that list is named after heiress Sarah Winchester of the rifle-manufacturing dynasty. She expanded the premises from the original eight-bedroom farmhouse to the sprawling, 24,000-square-foot extravaganza that exists today. The "mystery" surrounds the house's construction and supposedly haunted aspects. Tours are available.

For more down-to-earth charms, Saratoga's residents enjoy several parks, including the exquisite Hakone Japanese Gardens and the decorous grounds of the Montalvo Arts Center, which holds music performances and hosts an eclectic range of exhibitions, including regular contemporary artist residencies.

In the center of the city, at the junction of Big Basin Way and the Saratoga-Los Gatos Road, sits historic Saratoga Village. Here, leafy avenues shade café patrons and boutique shoppers, wine is enjoyed in the well-stocked tasting rooms, and there are plenty of excellent restaurants from which to choose. It's also a popular destination for those seeking a little pampering, with over 25 nail and hair salons, spas, and barbershops.

Those craving a little wilderness will find easy access to trails and forested hillsides at Sanborn Park, Fremont Open Space Preserve, or Wildwood Park. Saratoga is one of the greenest cities in California. Those seeking Californian vistas can head up to the many hillside vineyards or take the Overlook Trail from the grounds of Villa Montalvo to gaze down on the Santa Clara Valley below.

West Valley Community College hosts a farmers’ market each Saturday morning, at which around 50 growers and food producers sell their wares. More eclectic than many such markets, you'll find wild mushrooms, honey, Asian vegetables, and wine for sale. Lying within such a fertile part of the Bay area, Saratoga is very well served for local produce and attracts food connoisseurs.

With its proximity to San Jose, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz, Saratoga is popular with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and businesspeople seeking a comfortable and luxurious refuge from big city living. The city has retained its historic village characteristics while providing all the creature comforts of 21st-century living.
