About San Roque
San Roque was named after a Carmelite Friar, the patron saint of invalids. Development of the district began in the 1920s, starting with the creation of Rutherford Park, known for its distinct curving streets that radiate from a central circular hub called Argonne Circle.
Originally, a golf club was planned for this area. However, due to the Great Depression, the designated land for the club was instead deeded to the City of Santa Barbara, becoming the beloved Steven's Park and San Roque Park. The expansion of San Roque, like much of Santa Barbara, experienced significant growth during the postwar housing boom in the 1950s.
One of the notable features of San Roque is its mature oaks and pines, which create a lush canopy over the elegant curving streets. This established neighborhood offers the benefit of a beautiful natural environment.
With the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains as a backdrop, the meticulously landscaped yards and welcoming entrances further enhance the neighborhood's charm and appeal. San Roque benefits from a microclimate that tends to be around five degrees warmer than the rest of the city, providing an ideal setting for flourishing gardens.
San Roque has three great parks. Among them, Steven's Park is the most popular playground, spanning 25 acres and offering play equipment, a creek, and access to hiking trails.
The neighborhood is also fortunate to have some of Santa Barbara's most highly regarded schools. Peabody Charter Elementary School and el Montecito Elementary School, a private co-educational institution, serve the community. Additionally, nearby schools in the neighboring North San Roque/La Cumbre area include Hope and Monte Vista Elementary Schools, as well as La Colina Junior High.
San Roque residents enjoy convenient access to various amenities, such as grocery stores, shopping centers, salons, banks, and the post office. Whatever you may need, you'll find it nearby
While San Roque currently lacks a formal neighborhood association or organized decision-making groups, the community maintains an informal neighborhood watch to ensure safety and security for its residents.
