Living In San Mateo

First developed as a summer playground for wealthy San Franciscans in the 1800s, the bayside city of San Mateo is now a bustling suburban city beloved by many Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. Although suburban, San Mateo has a vibrant downtown scene, lively nightlife, and many great restaurants.

Culturally diverse and bustling downtown San Mateo sits east of S El Camino Real and includes Central Park and the Japanese Garden. Southeast Asian food is a specialty, and residents and visitors have a host of other world cuisines to choose from, including Mexican, Brazilian, Hawaiian, and Japanese. Cafes, spas, karate dojos, and even a School of Rock can be found here.

Central Park, the city's largest green space, is renowned for its ornate Japanese Garden, once part of the Kohl Mansion grounds, now converted into a 16.3-acre verdant haven in the city's southwest corner. Designed by landscape architect Nagao Sakurai of Tokyo's Imperial Palace, the exquisitely arranged garden contains a pagoda, koi pond, tea house, and bamboo grove. It's one of the undisputed highlights of San Mateo. Elsewhere the park offers a rose garden, many shady picnic tables, and a mini train.

On the other side of San Mateo, Coyote Point hosts one of the city’s two golf courses (the other being the pristine Peninsula Golf and Country Club) plus a recreation area with walking trails, a small beach, and the chance to yacht spot at the city’s Marina. You’ll also find CuriOdyssey there, a science museum and zoo featuring bobcats, otters, birds of prey, and various reptiles and amphibians.

Shoppers are well-served in the city, with the Hillsdale Shopping Center providing an assortment of stores, a food court, VR and Escape Room experiences, and a luxurious Cinepolis cinema. There's a great farmers market too, which operates year-round on the College of San Mateo grounds. Almost 100 local farmers and growers sell their produce at the market, including cheesemakers, beekeepers, and bakeries.

San Mateo is also equidistant between San Francisco and San Jose and close to the main access roads leading into the Purisma Creek Redwoods Preserve. This 5,412-acre preserve allows enjoying majestic redwoods and views of the coastline and Half-Moon Bay to the west. Seal Point Park has windsurfing, beach walks, and plenty of the titular mammals to spot on the city's eastern flank.

Offering the comfortable domesticity of the suburbs with the bustling energy of a vibrant downtown scene, San Mateo is very much in demand for Silicon Valley workers and aspiring professionals.
