About San Jose

Located in Santa Clara County, roughly an hour south of San Francisco, San Jose is a large bustling city. Considered the de facto capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose is home to dozens of well-known international companies. PayPal, Adobe, eBay, and many more household tech names are headquartered in San Jose, with many more big brands in surrounding communities.

San Jose is served by three freeways and US Highway 101, making it easy and convenient to reach surrounding cities and communities by car. That said, traffic congestion can be an issue here, and many local commuters choose to take advantage of the extensive public transport network. The VTA light rail is an excellent and affordable way to get around the city, providing access to the rest of Silicon Valley. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system connects San Jose to Oakland, San Francisco, and the Bay Area suburbs.

Some of Northern California's best shopping and dining can be found in San Jose, with the downtown area acting as the region's commercial hub. This attractive historic district is home to hundreds of shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants and is always buzzing with activity. San Pedro Market Square lies at the heart of downtown, offering indoor and outdoor dining options in elegant surroundings. There's an impressive collection of global food on offer here, as well as top-notch coffee, locally brewed beer, and live music.

Located in West San Jose, Santana Row is another popular commercial district. Santana Row is also home to several excellent dining options, ranging from high-end restaurants to cozy and casual eateries featuring upscale boutiques and big-name brands. Elsewhere, San Jose's incredible diversity is on full display in neighborhoods like Japantown, Little Saigon, Little Italy, and Little Portugal. Vibrant and fascinating, these small districts are home to dozens of great restaurants and annual festivals and thriving markets.

San Jose is home to a small, yet thriving arts and culture scene. There's always something going on, whether it's a new art exhibit or a live music show at one of several venues. Residents and visitors enjoy access to awesome museums such as the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and the famous Winchester Mystery House. Cutting-edge interactive and educational exhibits can be found at the Children's Discovery Museum and Tech Interactive. For music lovers, the beautiful 1927 California Theater offers opera and orchestral performances, while the impressive Montgomery Theater, dating from 1936, provides a variety of plays and other performances.

San Jose enjoys near-perfect year-round weather, especially for those who appreciate plenty of warm, sunny days. The city is spared the dreaded San Francisco fog; instead, it basks in over 300 days of sunshine. Temperatures seldom dip below freezing, and the hottest days rarely see the mercury rise above 90 degrees. This mild, comfortable climate is ideal for spending time outdoors, and there are popular parks and green spaces dotted throughout the city. Running through the center of San Jose, Guadalupe River Park features sports facilities, bike trails, pathways, and lawns in beautifully landscaped surroundings. The Municipal Rose Garden is another San Jose gem, featuring over 4,000 rose bushes and highlighting 200 varieties. The garden also features Douglas fir trees, quiet lawns, and a central fountain.

San Jose is surrounded by some of Northern California's wildest and most impressive natural scenery. Residents can easily escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, and it takes no time to reach unspoiled natural areas. To the south, Almaden Quicksilver County Park offers miles of hiking, biking, and horse riding trails, as well as abundant wildlife. The rolling hills contain plenty of evidence of California's mining past, and local guides give tours of the fascinating ruins.

To the east, Joseph D. Grant County Park lies in the foothills of the Diablo Range. This enormous 9,500-acre natural area is a popular spot for camping adventures, as well as hiking, mountain biking, and stargazing.
