Living in Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks is a hilly neighborhood centered on the titular hills, which rival Mount Davidson for an elevation of 925 feet. Known as “Eureka” and “Noe,” these peaks provide spectacular views over the surrounding region and can be accessed via the 37 Corbett Muni Line to Crestline Drive, where there’s a flight of wooden steps to the top. Christmas Tree Point is where one will find the best views.
Sutro Tower is a 977-foot-high TV Antenna built in 1973 to improve local television reception. The tower was widely criticized when erected but has become a quirky and beloved local landmark. It looks terrific silhouetted against the sunset.
To the north of the neighborhood is another great spot to take in the city at sunset. Tank Hill has a wild, rocky, and natural feel with plenty of trees and wildflowers. Nearby you’ll see some excellent examples of Victorian homes, and the elevation lets you gaze voyeuristically into pristine backyards and gardens.
The hill is named after a water storage facility built here at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1941, it was heavily camouflaged to protect it from expected attacks following Pearl Harbor that never materialized. The trees and shrubs which characterize this hidden oasis date back to that wartime effort.
