Living in Sea Cliff

The Sea Cliff neighborhood has one of the city's best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Baker Beach and the cozier China Beach (named after gold rush-era Chinese fishermen who moored their boats there) are popular draws for those seeking a quiet spot to paddle or picnic. Though lacking the type of facilities you might expect of larger beaches, these sheltered coves offer a calm respite from the bustle of the city nonetheless.

Known as one of the more elite residential zones in San Francisco, Sea Cliff is a planned community founded in 1913, containing impressive mansions by notable architects, including Willis Polk (9, 25, and 45 Scenic Way) and Julia Morgan (50 Scenic Way). The sharply sloping but lush coastline offers residents dramatic Pacific Ocean vistas. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey owns several homes here, and other notable past residents include actors Robin Williams and Sharon Stone, photographer Ansel Adams and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett.

Nature lovers can check out the Land's End Trail and Coastal Path via colorfully painted Lincoln Park Steps. The views are fantastic, and the terrain is challenging. Locals also have the Presidio Park to explore, which can be reached from El Camino del Mar or Baker Beach.

Popular attractions in or near the neighborhood include the Sutro Baths (remains of a grand Victorian bathhouse) and the Legion of Honor Museum in Lincoln Park, which holds an impressive and diverse collection of European and Ancient artwork, sculpture, and decorative arts. The museum also hosts talks and music recitals and is free to visit on Saturdays.

If you're visiting Sea Cliff, bring a camera. If you're buying a home here, get a tripod and telescope.
