Living in Pacific Heights

Arguably the most prestigious address in the city, Pacific Heights is a hilly, leafy district with two excellent parks, Alta Plaza and Lafayette. Both parks are beautifully landscaped and offer relaxing walks, incredible views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, and glimpses of some of the most impressive homes, including the 1912-13 French Classical-style Spreckels Mansion.

Fillmore Street is a must-visit for upscale shopping and designer brands, with local boutiques and restaurants aplenty. On three blocks of Broadway Street between Divisadero and Lyon Street, you’ll find “Billionaires’ Row," where wealthy industrialists rebuilt their mansions following the 1906 earthquake, abandoning the previous moneyed enclave of Nob Hill. In recent years, tech gurus have owned many of these homes from companies like Yelp, Apple, and Oracle.

Given how frequently car chases are filmed on the hilly streets of San Francisco, it's fitting that SF is home to the Academy of Art University Automobile Museum at Van Ness Avenue. The museum boasts a collection of classic cars to inspire and stimulate the University's industrial design students.

To the northwest of the neighborhood, adjacent to the Presidio, are the Lyon Street Steps, a landscaped local landmark offering stunning views. Overall, Pacific Heights is a great place to wander and take photographs and gives residents a quiet retreat from the more bustling sectors of the city.
