Homes for Sale on Nob Hill

View all active real estate listings on Nob Hill, a neighborhood belied by its unimpressive name, located between North Beach and the Tenderloin districts of San Francisco's NE bay area. Nob Hill has a dense, urban feel, with a well-to-do populace. Its name refers to the self-appointed nobility (or “nobs”) who made their fortunes after the gold rush. Some remnants of those grandiose days can be found in the homes built after the reconstruction, such as the James C. Flood Mansion beside Huntington Park. It was once where the city’s “big four” railroad barons built their mansions.

Living on Nob Hill

Today, Nob Hill boasts some of the city's fanciest hotels, including the Fairmont, Intercontinental, and Stanford Court, all situated around Sacramento and California Streets. The latter incorporates some of the original Stanford Mansion, which was destroyed, along with the rest of the “big four” residences during the 1906 earthquake and fire, which devastated the region.

Near the big hotels is the picturesque Huntington Park, with its ornate fountain and shady benches where one can catch up on reading.

The neighborhood is home to the Cable Car Museum on Washington Street, where one can see vintage cable cars and pulling equipment. For another take on local history, the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum provides fascinating insights into the arts and culture of a community whose engineering skills helped build the railroads that made the Nob Hill elite wealthy. San Francisco’s world-famous Chinatown is adjacent to the neighborhood, beginning east of Stockton Street.

Head downhill to Polk Street for shops, bars, and restaurants and a much more down-to-earth and affordable scene, or stay high above the city with a gig at The Masonic. This large auditorium hosts the top music and comedy stars visiting the city. Nob Hill is a picturesque and historic neighborhood that remains one of SF's most exclusive zip codes.
