About Forest Hill

Forest Hill is part of a group of similar neighborhoods situated to the west and south of Mount Davidson. One common feature of these neighborhoods is that they are all upscale areas with large homes that are more suburban in character than most of the other single-family homes in San Francisco. Essentially all of the homes in Forest Hill and the adjacent districts are fully detached and sit on much larger lots than the average city home. These large lots enable the homes to be set back much further from the street and create a green, tree-lined streetscape with beautiful lawns and gardens. In contrast, most other single-family homes throughout the city are on 25-foot wide by 100-foot deep lots that are so close to the street, there is no room to park a car without blocking the sidewalk. St. Francis Wood is consistently the most expensive street for homes in Forest Hill.

Despite being located in the city, Forest Hill feels suburban as there is no easily accessible shopping district nearby. However, there is an important transportation link located near the intersection of Laguna Honda and Dewey Boulevard. The Forest Hill Muni station is a major junction for different bus lines and is an underground subway station for three different subway lines that link to the downtown financial district and numerous other popular neighborhoods. The nearest major area of retail shops and restaurants is West Portal, which is roughly half a mile to the southwest. Another significant shopping and dining area is located a little further north at 9th & Irving in the Inner Sunset.

From a weather perspective, Forest Hill is situated in the lee of a chain of hills, including Grand View Park, Golden Gate Heights, and Hawk Hill. These hills often stop the fog coming in from the Pacific Ocean during the worst fog months of the year. As a result, Forest Hill is often sunny and warmer when most of the neighborhoods to the west are shrouded in the heavy fog that comes and goes throughout the summer.
