About Excelsior

The main shopping and retail area is located along Mission Street. Residents have easy access to downtown San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area via the two nearby BART stations: one on San Jose near Ocean and the other in Glen Park on Bosworth near Diamond.

The Excelsior enjoys some of the best weather in San Francisco, as the summer fog usually burns off before reaching the area. The neighborhood borders John McLaren Park and the Gleneagles Golf Course, which is the 5th largest contiguous green space in the city.

The Excelsior is a diverse neighborhood with a strong immigrant population. The first immigrants arrived in the 1860s. Notably, the Excelsior was the home and birthplace of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Unfortunately, it was also the home of Supervisor Dan White, who assassinated Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk and used the “Twinkie defense” to reduce his sentence.
