About Cole Valley

Cole Valley is a neighborhood in San Francisco that has a more upscale and "normal" feel compared to others like the Haight which still retains an edginess (that is mainly faux).

The retail area in Cole Valley is a short strip that runs along Cole Street from just south of Frederick to Parnassus. While this shopping and dining area is smaller than both the Inner Sunset and the Haight, both neighborhoods are nearby.

The main shopping and dining area of the Haight is along Haight Street from Stanyan to Masonic. There is another retail area in Hayes Valley known as The Lower Haight that runs along Haight Street east of Divisadero.

Unlike many areas of San Francisco to the east and north, Cole Valley was not destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent fire in 1906. Consequently, the area boasts a large number of beautiful, mostly renovated, Victorian and Edwardian homes dating back to the 1880s and 1890s.

Proximity to Golden Gate Park provides residents with easy access to a tremendous number of resources and events for recreation, education, and culture. Golden Gate Park is one of San Francisco's crown jewels and a tremendous benefit for those living nearby.

Cole Valley lies in a transition zone from a fog and weather perspective because it is fairly central within the city. Neighborhoods to the west will be cooler, while neighborhoods to the east will be a little sunnier and warmer when the fog rolls in. Mount Sutro and Parnassus Heights often hold the summer fog back and contribute to the pronounced microclimates for which San Francisco is famous.

Cole Valley has great access to important transportation links. The N-Judah streetcar line stops at Carl and Cole before going underground and turning into a subway line that goes straight downtown to the financial district. Cole Valley is also very close to Oak and Fell, which are wide, one-way streets with timed lights that connect to Highway 101. Additionally, there is a reasonably good "back door" route along 7th Avenue and Laguna Honda that will get you to I-280 and points south.
