About Rancho Peñasquitos

Rancho Peñasquitos has a relaxed, suburban atmosphere and feels a million miles away from the noise and congestion of the big city. Still, there's plenty of shopping and dining nearby, which means residents have access to most of what they need on a day-to-day basis.

Rancho Peñasquitos Towne Center offers an eclectic collection of services and casual eateries, as well as cafes and pubs. Nearby, between Carmel Mountain Road and Highway 56, Plaza Rancho Peñasquitos is a slightly larger commercial zone featuring coffee shops, nail spas, restaurants, and more.

For a larger selection of shopping and dining, Rancho Peñasquitos residents head to nearby Carmel Mountain Plaza, which is home to big-name stores, restaurants, and a 12-screen movie theater.

When it comes to outdoor recreation, residents of Rancho Peñasquitos are spoiled for choice. Beautiful beaches are just a short drive from the center of the neighborhood. Local surfers and families head down Highway 56 to Torrey Pines and Del Mar on the weekends to enjoy a fun-filled day under the Southern California sun.

Closer to home, Rancho Peñasquitos offers a wide range of options for those who enjoy getting out into nature. Clocking in at over 2,000 acres, Black Mountain Open Space Park features miles of trails, including one which leads to the top of 1,554-foot Black Mountain. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is another local gem featuring awesome trails that wind their way past California oak forest, streams, and a waterfall. Locals are proud of this preserve, and the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve works tirelessly to help protect native plants and animals.

Numerous smaller local parks offer recreation and community, including Canyonside Park, which features various sports facilities and community and multi-purpose rooms. Hilltop Community Park is another popular area, providing access to Black Mountain's Summit Trail. This park features a playground, picnic areas, a gazebo, and a great community center with a craft room, a meeting room, and a kitchen.

Since 1995, the Fiesta de Los Peñasquitos has been held on the first weekend in May. Local community groups join forces for the parade, which kicks off this huge celebration. Later in the day, there's live entertainment across three stages, local food vendors, a popular beer garden, and zoned entertainment, including a fun and adventure zone. Other annual community events include a rummage sale, a golf tournament, and a tour of extravagantly lit homes during the winter holidays.
