About Ranch Architecture
Ranch is an architectural style characterized by low-pitched roofs, open floor plans, natural wood, and glass sliding doors. Ranch homes are typically one story in height. Their look is asymmetrical, and their overall aesthetic romanticizes California’s early history of ranchos, haciendas, and cowboy life in the West.
California Ranch homes were popularized by Cliff May, an architect who developed them in Sullivan Canyon, a bucolic neighborhood in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles.
Common Ranch-Style Home Characteristics:
- Attached garage
- Decorative cupolas
- Decorative iron or wooden porch supports
- Decorative shutters
- Informal floor plan
- Low-pitch roof, gable, and a large overhang
- One story high
- Shakes used for roof material
- Unimpeded access to-and-from indoor and outdoor areas
- Wooden and brick wall cladding
