About Pacific Beach

Given that Pacific Beach enjoys a fabulous year-round climate - with warm, sunny days seemingly on tap - it’s no surprise that locals and visitors alike spend much of their time outdoors, taking advantage of all the recreation activities on offer. The neighborhood’s beaches are among the most popular in all of Southern California, with miles of wide, sandy expanse stretching from Mission Bay Jetty to La Jolla’s rocky bluffs.

Surfing is a hugely popular activity in these parts, and it's at Tourmaline Beach in the northern end of the neighborhood that locals gather to wait for the next big wave. Although there's no swimming allowed, plenty of spectators also gather to watch intrepid surfers, kiteboarders, and windsurfers. Nearby, Crystal Pier is the place to be as the day draws to a close. This 1920's wooden structure is one of the best places in the city to watch spectacular sunsets.

Sunset Beach's boardwalk stretches for over three miles and is always buzzing with life. Local cyclists, rollerbladers, and runners crowd the oceanfront path, as well as those who prefer to sit and watch the world go by. The neighborhood's centrally-located main beach is a favorite place to swim, play, or relax on the sand. Nearby, there are plenty of places to choose from for a spot of lunch, as well as surf shops, funky stores, and bars.

Pacific Beach has one of the most highly rated nightlife scenes in San Diego, drawing visitors from all over the city. There’s a fun, youthful vibe in the many bars, clubs, and restaurants, and weekend evenings see streets buzzing with activity. The areas surrounding the boardwalk are full of shops and restaurants, and you’ll see food from all over the world on offer here.

Pacific Beach events and festivals are held throughout the year. Tuesday afternoons bring an awesome farmers market, offering local produce, artisan products, and more. October sees the biggest event of the year when thousands of locals and visitors descend on the boardwalk for Pacific Beachfest. This fantastic free event features food, live music, and a beer garden, as well as a famous fish taco contest, a 5K run, and a volleyball tournament.

Away from the shoreline, Mission Boulevard and Garnet Avenue offer a mecca for those who enjoy browsing independent stores. Galleries, clothing boutiques, and interesting shops abound, as well as yoga studios, cafes, and lively bars.
