Some believe that surfing had its start here, in the early 20th century, and by the late 1960s, Ocean Beach was an established hippie enclave. Today, a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere persists throughout the neighborhood, and the streets buzz with activity day and night.
Thanks to Southern California’s wonderful climate, Ocean Beach enjoys warm, sunny days throughout the year. Although summers can get quite hot, ocean breezes keep things from getting stifling. Residents here find that they don’t need a car to get around the neighborhood, often choosing to run errands under their own steam. The palm tree-lined streets are safe at any time of day, and locals can often be seen cruising on bikes or rollerblades.
Newport Avenue is Ocean Beach's main drag, and this compact three-block district exudes a charming, small-town vibe. Ocean Beach is known for its locally-owned, independent businesses, and Main Street is lined with cafes, boutiques, surf shops, and vintage emporiums. There's also a fantastic antique shopping area, where a multitude of treasures awaits. On Wednesday evenings throughout the year, Newport Avenue hosts the Ocean Beach Farmers Market, regarded as one of the best in the region; this outdoor market features crafts, art, entertainment, and amazing locally grown produce.
Ocean Beach is home to an eclectic collection of restaurants, too, ranging from casual breakfast joints to more upscale options. At the ocean end of Main Street, friendly pubs and bars proliferate. Residents and visitors alike gather here in the early evening to enjoy locally brewed beer, good company, and views of the sunset from outdoor decks.
Ocean Beach residents are rightly proud of their beaches and spend much of their time enjoying the sun, surf, and sand. Newport Avenue Beach is the most popular, offering world-class swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. Further north, Dog Beach is a wonderful off-leash beach for neighborhood canines, as well as intrepid surfers.
The Ocean Beach Pier is the longest concrete pier on the West Coast and provides a popular spot for local fishermen, as well as those who want to feel the salty air on their faces. At low tide, the area beneath the pier reveals a collection of tidepools that are fascinating to explore.
Ocean Beach hosts events and festivals throughout the year, the most popular of which is the Ocean Beach Street Fair. Held on the last Saturday of June, this extravaganza features live music, art, rides, vendors, and a chili cook-off. Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is another event that draws crowds from all over San Diego. As well as a huge beer garden on Newport Avenue, Oktoberfest features food, craft vendors, kids' activities, and a bratwurst-eating competition.
