About Mission Hills
Though primarily residential, Mission Hills does have an established and vibrant commercial center. The "main drag" of Mission Hills is Washington Street, home to numerous boutiques, home stores, galleries, and cafes. There are also plenty of restaurants, lounges, and wine bars for the evening crowd, and this neighborhood hub stays lively well into the evening. It's only a short distance to Hillcrest, where residents will find grocery stores, restaurants, and a more buzzing nightlife scene. Old Town is also within easy reach, offering cafes, restaurants, and museums.
Mission Hills residents are fiercely proud of their neighborhood. A favorite local activity is to pass through the residential streets, admiring the historic homes and the stunning views of the surrounding city.
Mission Hills is also home to wonderful parks and open spaces, where locals and visitors can routinely exercise, relax, and play. Pioneer Park is a favorite open space, mainly grassy lawns, and eucalyptus groves. You'll see locals playing sports, picnicking, and practicing tai chi in Pioneer Park, and there are also free concerts here during the summer months. Other favorite local parks include Heritage County Park and Presidio Park - a huge area that features rolling, grassy hills, historic sites, and a wonderful museum.
Mission Hills Nursery is one of the neighborhood's most popular attractions, drawing visitors from all over the city. Started in 1910 and still going strong today, this nursery was the brainchild of Kate Sessions, a local woman who is said to have "single-handedly planted Balboa Park."
Mission Hills is a tight-knit community, with popular events and festivals held throughout the year. Aside from the Summer Concerts in the Park, there are well-attended garden tours, awesome outdoor movie nights, and a Fourth of July extravaganza featuring a parade, games, and a BBQ competition.
