About Mission Beach

For some, Mission Beach has the perfect climate as warm, sunny days are the norm for much of the year. All that sunshine means that residents can make the most out of all the outdoor activities on offer here.

Swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, and kite surfing are all super-popular pursuits in Mission Beach, and locals can always be found enjoying the oceanfront life. The beach is wide and sandy, making it ideal for picnics, sunbathing, and engaging in another of Mission Beach’s favorite pastimes - people watching.

Locals think of Mission Beach as two separate neighborhoods. "North Mission" is bustling and energetic, and it's here you'll find much of what draws tourists to the area. Farther south, there are more locals than tourists, and a quieter, more low-key atmosphere prevails among the residential streets.

A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk runs the length of the neighborhood, and it is always crowded with joggers, rollerbladers, and those who choose to sit and watch the world go by. The beach becomes even wider the farther south one travels, and this area seldom feels crowded. Local fishermen know that South Mission Beach Park is the place to go for a good catch, with excellent fishing to be found along the jetty.

Across the neighborhood from the ocean, Mission Bay adds a different dimension to the neighborhood. The waters are calmer here, and Mission Bay Park is surrounded by open spaces, picnic areas, and trails. SeaWorld San Diego can be found here, too, attracting both locals and tourists.

Aside from SeaWorld, most of the activity in Mission Beach is centered around Belmont Park, a boardwalk amusement park featuring a 1920s rollercoaster, various fun rides, arcade games, and much more. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, as well as surf shops and novelty stores.

Mission Boulevard is the neighborhood's main drag and is lined with independent shops, surf shops, cafes, restaurants, and much more. There's a friendly vibe and a real sense of community among the independent business owners.

Although Mission Beach’s nightlife scene is a far cry from the raucous partying that’s made Pacific Beach famous, there are still plenty of places to let off some steam once the sun has gone down. Many of the neighborhood clubs and bars have a laid-back beach vibe, but the fun often continues well into the wee hours.
