About La Jolla

La Jolla started out as a 19th-century resort, not much more than a few scattered beach cottages. Although the city is now home to mansions and upscale hotels, the atmosphere is still laid-back, and La Jolla maintains the friendly vibe of a beach town. Thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate, residents and visitors alike enjoy spending much of their time outdoors, swimming, surfing, and sunbathing on the beach.

Scuba diving classes are on offer at La Jolla Shores beach, while La Jolla Cove is a favorite spot for swimming and snorkeling. Perhaps the most popular beach is the Children's Pool La Jolla, where a seawall creates calm waters. There are harbor seals here, too, and locals gather each evening to enjoy epic sunset views. Inland, La Jolla is home to miles of trails that snake through the canyons, with hiking and mountain biking among the most popular activities.

Prospect Street is the main drag that runs along La Jolla's commercial core. The downtown area offers plenty of upscale dining choices and high-end boutiques. All are rather charming with relaxed and welcoming atmospheres. Every Sunday, locals meet at the local La Jolla Open Aire Market to socialize and browse what's on offer. It's a great place to grab a cup of coffee and shop for locally grown produce and artisanal crafts.

Residents of La Jolla are committed to supporting the arts, and there are huge murals decorating the walls of many buildings. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego can be found here, as well as the Tony-Award winning La Jolla Playhouse, which draws visitors from all over the region. The regular Village Art Walk is a popular way for community residents to connect with local artists, many of whom display their work in one of the Prospect Street galleries.

Residents of La Jolla love coming together as a community, and there are events and festivals throughout the year. One of the biggest events of the year is the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival, which is held over two days in October. This huge festival is free to attend and features over 150 established artists, wine and beer gardens, live music, and much more. In April, classic car enthusiasts from across the world descend on La Jolla for the Concours D'Elegance Car Show. There are loads to see and do, and it is always a fun atmosphere.
