Most of Del Mar Mesa's development took place in the 2000s, and planners made an effort to retain the rustic feel of the neighborhood. To this day, Del Mar Mesa only allows one home per acre of land, with city and county leaders determined to retain the idea of the neighborhood existing as an "urban preserve."

Del Mar Mesa residents are an active bunch and are fortunate to have easy access to many outdoor activities. Del Mar Mesa Preserve occupies a large portion of the eastern section of the community and features a network of trails to enjoy. Thanks to the Multiple Species Conservation Program, much of the preserve is inaccessible to conserve the native trees, plants, and wildlife.

Located in the southeastern section of the neighborhood, Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is a wonderland for local cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders. There are miles of well-maintained trails in the preserve and scenic views of incredible rock formations, giant native oaks, and rushing streams. Just a short drive to the west, mile upon mile of amazing beaches await, offering locals the chance to enjoy the region's warm, sunny weather by surfing, swimming, and relaxing on the sand.

Golf is a super-popular activity in Del Mar Mesa, and locals enjoy the links at the Grand Del Mar Golf Club. Located in the heart of the neighborhood, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar offers many activities that are open to the public. Golf and horseback riding are among a few of the favorites.
