Over half of Poway's 39 square miles is set aside to help maintain a beautiful natural environment. The city is home to over 5,000 acres of open space, including 25 parks and 82 miles of trails. The climate here is superb - with warm, sunny days common throughout the year. Temperatures rarely become uncomfortable during the summer, and winters are mild and pleasant. It isn't surprising that Poway residents spend much of their time outdoors, enjoying their beautiful city.

Lake Poway is a popular spot among local anglers who fish for trout and bass during the summer months. Boat rentals are available. The park is an ideal place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Elsewhere, Blue Sky Ecological Reserve exemplifies Poway's dedication to preserving its natural environment. There are miles of trails to explore in the 700-acre canyon that is filled with oaks and native plants. In the center of town, Old Poway Park is a beautifully landscaped open area that's the hub for many community activities. This is a popular spot to picnic under the huge old shade trees and admire the well-preserved historical buildings on weekends.

Adjacent to Old Poway Park is a quaint commercial strip home to a small selection of restaurants and independent shops. The local farmers market is held here on Saturdays, with over 65 vendors selling produce, flowers, snacks, and crafts.

The majority of Poway's shopping and dining can be found further south, along Poway Road. This part of town is home to a wide array of restaurants, and you'll find cuisine from all over the world on offer, including Japanese, Thai, Mexican, and American. Strip malls dominate the shopping scene in Poway, but that's not to say there aren't plenty of independent shops to discover. There are also large grocery stores and a movie theater, as well as all the services you'd expect.

Events and festivals are held throughout the year, including several productions at the wonderful Poway Centre for the Performing Arts. August brings the Poway Americana Festival, a free event that draws thousands of visitors each year. There's a classic car show, kid zone, beer garden, and much more. In September, the Sam Hinton Folk Festival features open-air performances and music workshops. Other community events include an old-fashioned July 4th celebration and Christmas in the Park.
