About Palo Alto

Although Palo Alto is a fairly small city, residents enjoy a modern, urban lifestyle. Within its borders one will find tranquil neighborhoods and an eclectic mix architectural styles. Quite, tree-lined streets are just minutes from tech firms, cafes, and entertainment. Many residents can get around just fine without a car, and the streets buzz with activity.

Palo Alto's main commercial zone is centered around California Avenue and University Avenue. Here, you'll find world-renowned, Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as low-key cafes, locally owned businesses, boutiques, and grocery stores.

Thanks to the impressive diversity of Palo Alto's population, there are an outstanding collection of restaurants here. Cuisine from all corners of the globe is on offer in restaurants along California and University, including French, Italian, Latin American, and Japanese. For a larger selection of shops and eateries, locals head to Stanford Shopping Center, an outdoor mall that's home to dozens of big-name brands and luxury boutiques.

With more than 30 parks within the city limits, Palo Alto offers plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the beautiful California sunshine. One of the most popular options among local kids is Mitchell Park, home to the epic Magical Bridge Playground. Elsewhere, Bylands Nature Preserve offers a more serene experience. Located along the Bay, this huge open area offers miles of multi-use trails, birdwatching, and kayaking.

Stanford University is one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. The Palo Alto campus is home to the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, which features an extensive collection of Rodin sculptures. Children's cultural activities include the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo, which offers interactive educational exhibits, birds, and animals.

Events and festivals are held throughout the year, adding to Palo Alto's colorful vibrancy. In June, Palo Alto World Music Day offers locals the chance to enjoy performances from all over the world. Later in the year, the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts is a two-day extravaganza that draws thousands of visitors. Art from hundreds of vendors is on offer, as well as the chance to watch sidewalk chalk artists at work.
