Homes for Sale in Deepwell
The Deepwell neighborhood is named after the 630 feet deep well that apricot farmer Henry Person dug in 1926 in search of much-needed groundwater. The subdivision of Deepwell Estates was founded in 1952 during the postwar property boom in Palm Springs. Deepwell boasts a range of architectural styles including Desert Ranch, Spanish Revival, and Mid-Century Modern homes.

Deepwell Real Estate
Less renowned than some of Palm Springs’ other neighborhoods, Deepwell was home to many celebrities including The Birds star Tippi Hedren, comedian Jerry Lewis, and baseball legend Leo Durocher. It also offers more facilities than many other residential neighborhoods of Palm Springs.
Architecture in Deepwell
Notable Deepwell designs include the “Playboy Pad” designed by Stan Sackley in a brick-fronted modernist style and the hillside William Holden Deepwell Residence, by Hugh Kaptur, with its floating white roof terraces, cantilevered plinth, and gallery-like interiors.
Another notable Kaptur creation is the “Macy House” at 1577 Calle Marcus, which features an elegantly slanting, zigzag frontage and geometric detailing. Whether Modernist or otherwise, you won’t find a boring or drab home anywhere in Deepwell.
Living in Deepwell
The 111B Highway to the south and west of Deepwell provides boutique hotels and a handful of restaurants. The neighborhood is largely residential, but there are a few stores, including homewares, clothing, and a shopping center.
Once a golf course, the recently re-wilded Prescott Preserve, to the northeast, provides a picturesque green retreat from the city, with trails, lakes, and a butterfly garden. Fabulous mountain vistas form a backdrop to palms and rocky scrubland, where visitors may spot egrets and other migratory birds drinking.
