Living in Millbrae

Chiefly an inland community, Millbrae does boast one tiny strip that borders San Francisco Bay, at the picturesque Bayfront Park, just south of the airport. The town is built on a landscape of rolling hills, as suggested by its name ("brae" is Scots for hillside). In addition to the fantastic natural resource of the State Parks to the west and south, the city contains the Green Hills Country Club, a 143-acre private golf club, and a handful of other small parks and trails. The 108-acre Junipero Serra Park is a relaxing oasis north of the city boundary.

History buffs can visit the Millbrae History Museum and the Southern Pacific Train Depot for a trip back into the 19th and early 20th centuries. These attractions are open on Saturdays only, which is also the day the local farmer’s market springs into life with live music from local performers, and stalls providing local fruit and vegetables, meat, pastries, preserves, and more.

During the Labor Day weekend, the city holds an Arts and Wine Festival (always a welcome combination!) exhibiting the work of over 300 local artists, plus wine from local producers. There’s live entertainment, classic cars, and gourmet food stalls. Running annually for over 50 years, the festival is an annual community fixture well-worth a visit.

For those who like to explore off-road, the Spur Trail takes you from Highway 82 in the southeast through a series of green paces to Central Park in the heart of the city.

Millbrae offers a suburban haven with enough things to do in the evening and at the weekend that you won't feel the need to head to SF or San Jose too frequently. Situated adjacent to the airport, it's also an excellent location for frequent flyers. The city indeed constitutes one of the peninsula’s hidden gems.
