Living in Marina del Rey
Occupying just one and a half square miles of oceanfront in Los Angeles County, Marina del Rey is an unincorporated community located southeast of Venice and north of Playa del Rey. The community's harbor was built in the 1950s on the wetlands of Ballona Creek and is now the largest small boat harbor in the country, with space for thousands of boats and yachts. Home to sought-after waterfront properties, a vibrant marina, and gorgeous sandy beaches, Marina del Rey is an affluent seaside community offering laid-back California vibes, a friendly neighborhood feel, and plenty of local color.
Although close to more well-known Westside communities such as Venice and Santa Monica, Marina del Rey offers a quieter and more low-key atmosphere. Daily life here is relaxed, and the neighborhood never feels hectic or overcrowded.
The marina is the beating heart of this friendly community, and there's always a vibrant scene here. Locals enjoy strolling the connected promenades, admiring the numerous boats and luxury yachts while enjoying the fresh, salty air. There are dozens of fantastic restaurants surrounding the harbor, many of which serve up the freshest seafood around. Relaxed outdoor seating is the norm in this area, and some of the views on offer are second-to-none.
Located on the southeastern side of the harbor, Fisherman's Village is a quaint and picturesque hub that's always bustling with activity. There's a small collection of independent boutiques here and businesses specializing in watersport rentals and pleasure cruises.
Locals come to Fisherman's Village for the pleasant atmosphere and excellent dining options, with offerings ranging from casual comfort food to upscale Italian. Fisherman's Village is also a popular place to relax with a craft cocktail and watch the sun go down. Residents head to Waterside Marina del Rey for a more comprehensive shopping selection, a pleasant outdoor mall featuring a supermarket, big-name stores, and services.
Unsurprisingly, many Marina del Rey residents enjoy spending time outdoors, taking advantage of all the activities on offer. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing are all popular local activities. The Marina Peninsula is where folks go for a complete beach experience.
Located across the harbor from Fisherman's Village and within the protected harbor, Marina Beach - known as "Mother's Beach" to locals - offers calm waters for safe swimming. This lovely man-made beach features volleyball courts, picnic tables, and barbeques.
An excellent bike path runs from Mother's Beach to Burton W. Chase Park in the community's southeast corner. This gorgeous 10-acre park is surrounded on three sides by the harbor. Super-popular among locals, the park is perfect for spending a lazy afternoon watching the world (and the yachts) go by.
The park also hosts events and celebrations throughout the year. The most popular is MarinaFest, a two-day extravaganza that features a boat show, live music, DJs, food trucks, and kid's activities. Other notable events include an excellent summer concert series, a celebration of classic cars and yachts on Old Fashioned Day, and Marina Lights in December.
