Living in Los Gatos

Spanish for "the cats," the Los Gatos was named after the cougars and bobcats you'll still find roaming the area's foothills.

Los Gatos started as a flour milling operation in the 1850s. It was incorporated in 1887 and became a vital logging hub until the end of the 19th century.

Today it is known for its agriculture, mainly fruit growing, and the many notable artists and actors who have lived there, including John Steinbeck, Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, and beat poet Neal Cassady. The town is renowned for its eclectic arts scene, which thrives in its many museums, galleries, and art associations.

These include the Los Gatos Art Association, the Whitney Modern, Gallery 24, and the New Museum Los Gatos, all of which sit within a few blocks of one another in the burgeoning gallery district around University Avenue and South Santa Cruz Avenue. The Whitney is a popular draw with fine contemporary art and a strong collection of international painters and sculptors. Art collectors can tour several commercial galleries nearby, then dine in one of the celebrated local restaurants.

The Los Gatos downtown scene is lively during the day, with clubs offering live jazz and summer concerts in the park at the Civic Center. At night, it's a little quieter, but locals can find late bars, sports bars, and dance venues. Much of the nightlife centers around eating, with many fine restaurants in the city, including a triple Michelin-starred one!

Nature lovers head out to the Vasona Lake Country Park, popular with walkers and picnickers. You'll find the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, a small gauge railway, a carousel, and sports facilities for the more actively inclined. To the east of the city, there's the Heintz Open Space and Belgatos Park, which offers excellent views out over the valley, a playpark, and shady spots to sit with a book. More extensive trails are accessed from the city's south, including routes to Mount El Sombroso.
