Van Nuys Info

Sound City Studios is one of Van Nuys’ venerable institutions. Founded in 1970, it’s revered for the sound quality of recordings produced within its sound-proofed walls. Some of the most iconic rock albums of all time were put to tape here.

If you drive around Van Nuys, no doubt you will notice an Art Deco building, Van Nuys Civic Center (1932); it is one most prominent (and tallest) landmarks in the Valley. Built as a neighborhood city hall and satellite of the main Los Angeles City Government, it stands 165 feet tall.

The Metro Orange Line serves the district with two stops: Van Nuys and Sepulveda Orange Line Station. Furthermore, buses and a major, cross-valley bike path (Metro Orange Line bicycle path) supply plenty of ways to get around town (and beyond).

Parks and Recreation

Van Nuys is home to two recreation centers operated by Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the Delano and Van Nuys Recreation Centers.

Between the two, residents have access to facilities for Baseball, Soccer, Softball, Basketball, Hockey (Indoor), Karate, Volleyball and programs like Ballet and Arts & Crafts.

The largest rec center, the Van Nuys / Sherman Oaks Recreation Center (VNSO), sits just outside the neighborhood’s border in Sherman Oaks. VNSO has tennis courts, a swimming pool, and has many sports leagues for both kids and adults.

Van Nuys Real Estate

Van Nuys is one of the more affordable neighborhoods within the city limits of Los Angeles. The housing stock in the neighborhood consists of single-family homes, townhomes, and condominiums. Residential architecture evolved here in distinct phases. Starting in 1911, Craftsman and Colonial Revival homes were commonly built. In the 1920s, Spanish Colonial and English Revival homes became popular. In the 1930s, many homes were built following the Minimal Traditional style. After WWII, California Ranch homes increased in popularity. The swelling population of Van Nuys - and much of San Fernando Valley - accelerated during the Postwar period, fueled in-part by low interest, government-backed loans (one of the benefits extended to veterans as part of the G.I. Bill). The 1950s and 1960s suburbanization of Los Angeles County further contributed to the area’s growth. From the 1970s onward, additional housing stock came in the form of condos and multi-unit investment properties.
