Sherman Oaks started as a planned neighborhood in 1927. Compared to other cities and districts in the region, that makes Sherman Oaks a relatively newer part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The layout and architecture have a much more suburban feel but still retains a modern, luxurious style.

Sherman Oaks and neighboring Van Nuys have shifted their respective boundary a few times at the request of residents in some of the smaller enclaves that straddle the border. That's why some businesses and recreation centers use the names "Van Nuys" and "Sherman Oaks" interchangeably.

Neighborhoods

Sherman Oaks can best be understood, geographically speaking, as a cluster of enclaves that reside either north or south of Ventura Boulevard.
