About Platform House Historic District
From the late 1940s to the mid-1950s, stilt house construction took place on both sides of the Santa Monica Mountains, dotting the neighborhoods of Hollywood Hills (on the south) and Studio City and Sherman Oaks (on the north).
Stilt homes represented a hillside residential design that could conquer the steep lots first subdivided in the 1920s. Those lots remained unimproved until stilt homes – which forgo foundations and retaining walls, instead favoring stilts and crisscrossed cables -- came along.
The Platform House Historic District residences were Built in the mid-1960s to highlight engineering innovations. Advertising for the tract promoted the homes as a collaboration between renowned modern architect Richard Neutra and Art Levine, structural engineer.
The district is one of only a few tightly arranged concentrations of postwar modern stilt homes in Los Angeles.
Changes to building regulations in mid-1960 halted construction of newly-built stilt homes as the new codified structural requirements made them cost-prohibitive.
