About Los Altos

Los Altos is around 38 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco. It consisently ranks as one of California's most expensive areas for residential real estate.

In stark contrast to many neighboring Silicon Valley communities, Los Altos has strict zoning laws that restrict commercial development to the downtown district and a handful of office parks along the Foothills Expressway and El Camino Real. All this means the city lacks the corporate presence found in others like Menlo Park and Redwood City. Instead, this is a tranquil residential area defined by attractive tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and plenty of open space.

Affectionately referred to as "The Village" by locals, Los Altos' downtown is a vibrant and thriving commercial zone. This quaint, six-block area encompasses accessible tree-shaded streets that draw visitors from across the region. Downtown Los Altos is home to over 150 businesses, many of which are locally owned. You'll find fashion boutiques, bookstores, galleries, and cozy cafes here, as well as an impressive collection of restaurants. There's food for every taste here, including French, Italian, Japanese, and American. Downtown is also home to a wonderful library and a beloved local community center.

The Los Altos Stage Company exemplifies a thriving arts scene in Los Altos - a local theater organization that offers musicals, comedies, and dramas. The city's fascinating cultural history is preserved at the Los Altos History Museum, which sits at the edge of downtown. This little gem is housed in a reproduction of a 1930s farmhouse and offers both permanent and rotating exhibits.

Residents of Los Altos are an active lot, and there are plenty of parks and green spaces to enjoy. Sports facilities can be found at Marymeade and McKenzie Parks, while Shoup Park is a tranquil haven, offering picnicking and hiking along a pretty creek.

Events and festivals fill the local calendar, and there's always something going on here. In July, the Los Altos Art and Wine Festival is the place to be, featuring vendors, food, and wine tastings. The holiday season kicks off with the Festival of Lights Parade, which is always eagerly anticipated. Colorful floats and marching bands make their way through downtown, and everyone enjoys the atmospheric lights.
