About Olivenhain
Occupying the easternmost section of the City of Encinitas, the upscale neighborhood of Olivenhain stretches north from the San Elijo Lagoon, along Manchester Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road. In the late nineteenth century, Olivenhain, which translates to "Olive Grove," was settled as a German colony. The area later developed into a thriving farming community, and a historic, rural atmosphere survives to this day.
Locals treasure Olivenhain's rural atmosphere, and zoning laws have protected the community from feeling overcrowded. Homes here are generally custom-built and detached, sitting on lots that range from half an acre to over five acres in size. The low-density zoning has kept Olivenhain special, and residents enjoy feeling like they're miles from anywhere. Another bonus to living here is the "dark skies" policy, which prevents street lighting from spoiling magnificent starry nights.
Olivenhain is truly a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and many locals enjoy the area's parks as part of their active lifestyles. There's a strong equestrian culture here, and residents making their way through the neighborhood on horseback is a common sight. On Lone Jack Road, Little Oaks Park is a fantastic horse park with an arena, trailer parking, and picnic tables. There's access to the extensive network of trails here, and horses share the routes with runners, hikers, and mountain bikers.
Nearby, Wiro Park features a playground and barbeques, while Sun Vista Park is where local dog owners gather while their pups play in the off-leash area. San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is another popular recreation area among dog walkers. This wonderful natural reserve features seven miles of trails and offers a relaxing opportunity to commune with nature.
Although Olivenhain is a mainly residential neighborhood, folks don't have to travel far to experience a wide selection of shopping, dining, and entertainment. There are a couple of neighborhood bakeries along Rancho Santa Fe Road, a small collection of services, and a grocery store at Encinitas Boulevard and Manchester Avenue. Further west, Encinitas Village Shopping Center offers a wider selection of grocery stores, shops, and casual eateries. Vibrant and historic downtown Encinitas lies a short drive from Olivenhain, and it's here that locals come to browse unique boutiques and galleries, eat out in one of the fantastic independent restaurants, or catch a movie at the beloved La Paloma Theater.
Residents of Olivenhain are fiercely proud of their neighborhood and always seek to strengthen community ties. The historic Town Meeting Hall is the spiritual heart of the community, where events and celebrations are held throughout the year. The July 4th parade and picnic is a highlight of the annual calendar and brings everyone together. Likewise, summer movie nights offer a chance to cozy up under blankets and enjoy a glass of wine. Other fun-filled events include Oktoberfest, a Halloween haunted house, and a holiday craft fair.
