About Coronado

Coronado was incorporated in 1890, and the city's rich history is evident when making your way through the tree-lined residential streets, where beautifully restored Victorian homes are a common sight.

Coronado's most famous landmark is the beachfront Hotel Del Coronado, drawing visitors to the island since its completion in 1888. This impressive Victorian structure is the jewel in Coronado's crown. The hotel offers guests an upscale experience with its boutique shops, on-site spa, and luxurious suites.

Coronado's beaches are among the best in the world, with locals and tourists flocking to the miles of pristine white sand to enjoy sunbathing, water sports, and people-watching. There's a beach for everyone here, and the excellent Southern California climate means beach days are almost always on the cards. Dog-friendly North Beach is most popular with local surfers, kiteboarders, and windsurfers, and as a bonus, one can often see Navy SEALS training nearby. As the sun sets, bonfires often dot the shoreline.

Further south, Silver Strand State Beach offers miles of undeveloped beaches, with fishing, swimming, volleyball, and camping among the most popular activities. Silver Strand also features beautiful bayside beaches, where the water is warmer and calmer. A developed area with fire rings and ramadas gives way to over a mile of undeveloped beach that’s ideal for exploring.

Golfers are well-served by the Coronado Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-72 course that offers wonderful views across the bay. In operation since 1957, this fantastic golf club also features a relaxed clubhouse with dining facilities and a cocktail lounge.

Coronado's commercial hub is a mile-long section of Orange Avenue, stretching from the bay to the ocean. Independent businesses line the city's main street, including bookstores, boutiques, galleries, cafes, and restaurants. Near the Coronado Bridge, Ferry Landing is a bayfront shopping and dining center, offering some of the city's best restaurants. You'll also encounter stunning views of downtown San Diego, the Coronado bridge, and sailboats bobbing in the bay.

Coronado's proximity to downtown San Diego means residents have easy access to some of the best shopping, dining, and entertainment in Southern California. That said, Coronado holds its own when it comes to artistic and cultural activities. There's a fantastic local community theater group in Coronado and the highly regarded Lamb's Players Theatre. This non-profit organization produces five shows each year in an intimate 350-seat theater.
