About Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills experienced much of its growth in the 1970s. After incorporation in 1982, the city put the brakes on further expansion. These zoning limits have helped Agoura Hills retain a small-town feeling and residents enjoy a high quality of life.

Agoura Hills is home to several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own vibe. You'll find a wide variety of architectural styles in Agoura Hills, although most of the construction took place in the 1970s and 1980s. The housing stock is primarily detached homes that range from cozy cottages and ranch-style houses to impressive luxury estate properties with equestrian facilities.

Living in Agoura Hills means you have access to everything you'll need in terms of shopping, dining, and entertainment. That said, you're never far from a wider selection in central Los Angeles. Many of the main services, such as grocery stores, gyms, and banks, are clustered along the Ventura Freeway, dividing Agoura Hills into north and south sections. Downtown Agoura Hills lies in the city's center and has recently experienced a renaissance of sorts.

Since the 1970s, the downtown area has been the economic and cultural heart of the community, and Twin Oaks Shopping Center has been a popular place to hang out. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants, and unique shops here, as well as grocery stores and services.

However, newer commercial development can be found at Malibu Junction, in the city's southern section. Known locally as Whizin's Row, after entrepreneur Art Whizin, this area has evolved into the city's entertainment district. There are several clubs, restaurants, and venues here, as well as Whizin Market Square. This fantastic shopping center boasts an upscale selection of boutiques, specialty food purveyors, and interesting restaurants.

Proximity to a wealth of outdoor recreation is one of the main reasons Agoura Hills is such a desirable place to live. Residents love to spend time outdoors, and there's always a park nearby. Old Agoura Park is a favorite among local horse lovers and features an arena and stables, and a network of trails. Elsewhere, Sumac Park is tucked away in a residential neighborhood and provides a popular space for local dog walkers.

Thanks to its superb location, Agoura Hills is a gateway to both the Simi Hills and the Santa Monica Mountains. Lying along the city's northern border, Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyon are pretty much on the doorstep of many Agoura Hills homes. This spectacular area offers hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, which meander through wooded hills and picturesque canyons. To the south, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area features hundreds of miles of multi-use trails, picnic areas, and stunning viewpoints.
